Men's Necklace Length Guide: Find Your Chain Size
For most men, a 20 or 22 inch chain is the right length. Go to 18 inches for a close fit at the collarbone. Go to 24 inches or more if you want a chain that hangs on your chest. The right choice depends on your neck size, your build, what you wear and whether the chain carries a pendant.
This guide shows you how to measure, how each length sits on the body, and how width changes the look. It also covers pendants, layering and common mistakes.
TL;DR
- 20 to 22 inches is the safest range for everyday wear on most men.
- 18 inches sits close to the neck. 24 inches and longer hangs on the chest.
- Measure your neck, then add 2 to 4 inches for a first estimate of the shortest length to try.
- Thin chains (2 to 3 mm) suit pendants. Wider chains (5 mm and up) suit bold, chain-only looks.
- A pendant looks best when it sits where you want it to, so choose the chain length first.

How to measure your neck and your chain
Start with a soft tape measure. A piece of string and a ruler also work.
- Wrap the tape around the base of your neck, just below the Adam’s apple. Keep it snug but not tight.
- Write down the number in inches.
- Add 2 inches for a close fit, 4 inches for a standard fit, or 6 to 8 inches for a longer drop.
For scale, the average adult male neck in the US is about 15.1 inches. A 15 inch neck plus 4 inches gives a 19 inch chain. In practice, you round to the nearest common size, which is 20 inches.
You can also measure a chain you already own. Lay it flat, fasten the clasp and measure from end to end. Do not measure the chain while it sits in a loop. Then compare that number to how the chain sits on you. If you like how it falls, buy that length again.
The length on a product page is the full length of the chain, clasp to clasp. It is not the drop. A 22 inch chain forms a loop with a drop of roughly 10 to 11 inches from the back of the neck to the lowest point, but this varies with the neck and the chain.

Men’s necklace length chart
Use this chart as a starting point. Bodies differ, so treat each row as a range.
| Length | Where it typically sits | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 16 inches | Tight at the base of the neck | Choker style, slim builds, open collars |
| 18 inches | At or just below the collarbone | Smaller necks, T-shirts, small pendants |
| 20 inches | Just below the collarbone | Everyday wear on most men |
| 22 inches | Upper chest | Pendants, charms, button-ups with the top button open |
| 24 inches | Mid chest | Larger builds, layering, bolder pendants |
| 26 to 28 inches | Lower chest | Statement chains, hoodies, layering over tees |
| 30 inches | Near the sternum | Wide, heavy chains and a streetwear look |
Two things change the result more than the number: your neck size and your chest. A 22 inch chain on a broad neck sits higher than the same chain on a slim neck. Try the length in a mirror before you commit, or measure a chain you already own.
How each length looks and feels
18 inches: close and light
An 18 inch chain is the shortest length most men wear. It stays visible above a crew neck and does not move much. It works well for smaller necks and for people who find longer chains annoying while they move or work out. On a thicker neck it can feel tight, so check your measurement first.
20 inches: the default
If you do not know where to start, start here. A 20 inch chain clears most collars, sits just below the collarbone and suits both a plain chain and a small pendant. It is also easy to layer under a shirt.
22 inches: more room for a pendant
The extra 2 inches drop a pendant into the upper chest. That gives it space to hang on its own instead of crowding the collar. If you plan to wear a charm or pendant every day, 22 inches is a strong choice.
24 inches: a visible chain
At 24 inches the chain becomes part of the outfit. It suits taller men and broader builds. It also layers well over a 20 inch chain. On a smaller frame it can look long, and a pendant may hit the middle of the chest.
26 to 30 inches: statement length
These lengths sit low. They work with wide chains, open shirts and layered looks. They also catch more on clothing, bags and seat belts. If you wear a chain daily, check how it behaves when you bend over or sit down.
Chain width: 2 mm, 3 mm and beyond

Length sets the position. Width sets the presence. Chain widths are measured in millimeters, and most men’s chains fall between 2 mm and 7 mm, with very heavy chains going up to 10 mm.
This is how the common widths read:
- 1.5 to 2 mm: fine and subtle. It disappears under a collar. Good for small pendants and charms.
- 3 mm: the everyday middle. It is visible without being loud and carries most pendants well.
- 4 to 5 mm: a clear presence. It works as a chain on its own or with a larger pendant.
- 6 mm and up: a statement piece. It looks best at 22 inches or longer, since the extra weight sits better on the chest.
2 mm vs 3 mm
The 1 mm difference is easy to see on the neck. A 2 mm chain looks delicate and works best with a light pendant. A 3 mm chain looks more solid, holds its shape and feels more like a men’s chain. If you wear one chain every day, 3 mm is the safer pick. If you want it hidden under a shirt, choose 2 mm.
Match width to length
Width and length work together. A wide chain at 18 inches can look crowded on the neck. A thin chain at 30 inches can look lost on the chest. As a rule, go longer as you go wider. Pairs such as 20 inches at 2 to 3 mm, 22 inches at 3 to 4 mm and 24 inches at 5 mm are easy to wear.
Chain style matters as well. A flat, tight link sits differently from a rounded, open link. Our guide to chain types explains the main styles and how to match them to a pendant.
Choose by build and neck size
Build changes how a chain sits. Use these pointers as a start.
- Slim build or smaller neck: try 18 to 20 inches. A longer chain can look like it is hanging off you.
- Average build: try 20 to 22 inches. This is the range where most men land.
- Broad shoulders, thicker neck or larger chest: try 22 to 24 inches. A shorter chain can feel tight and ride up the neck.
- Tall frame: add 1 to 2 inches to the length you would pick for an average height.
If you sit between two sizes, pick the longer one for a pendant and the shorter one for a plain chain. A pendant needs space to hang. A plain chain looks better close to the body.
Choose by outfit
The same chain looks different with different clothes.
- Crew neck T-shirt: an 18 to 20 inch chain stays visible above the collar. A longer chain disappears under the shirt.
- V-neck or open collar: 20 to 22 inches fills the open space well.
- Button-up with the top button open: 20 to 22 inches. Anything longer tends to hide behind the shirt.
- Hoodie or layered streetwear: 24 to 28 inches, so the chain shows over the top layer.
- Swim and beach days: pick a chain you can wear in water and keep it on the shorter side, so it does not catch on anything. Our guide to water resistant necklaces covers what to look for.
Pendants and charms change the math
A pendant moves the visual center of the necklace down. Two rules help.
- Pick the chain length by where the pendant should land. For the pendant to sit at the middle of the upper chest, 22 inches is a common choice. For a pendant near the collarbone, choose 18 to 20 inches.
- Check the bail. The bail is the loop that holds the pendant on the chain. It has to be large enough to slide over the chain’s links. We explain this in detail in our 1.5x bail rule guide.
Size matters here too. A small charm looks right on a thin chain. A large pendant needs a wider chain, or it will pull the chain forward and twist it.
If you wear one pendant daily, a stainless steel Palm Tree Charm in silver is an easy piece to build around. It is a clean shape that sits well on a 20 to 22 inch chain.
Layering two or three chains
Layering works when the chains are spaced out. Follow these steps.
- Pick your main chain first, usually 20 or 22 inches.
- Add a second chain 2 to 4 inches longer. A smaller gap makes the chains tangle and look like one.
- Vary the width. Pair a thin chain with a wider one so each reads separately.
- Put the pendant on the longer chain, or on the shorter one if it is small.
Two chains are plenty for most men. Three can work for a bold look, but each one needs its own length and width.

Common mistakes
- Buying by the number alone. A length on a page does not tell you where it sits on your neck. Measure first.
- Going too short for a pendant. A pendant on an 18 inch chain can crowd the collar. Move up to 20 or 22.
- Choosing a heavy chain at a short length. Wide chains need room, so go longer as you go wider.
- Ignoring the clasp. A good clasp is easy to fasten with one hand and stays closed. Test it before you wear the chain every day.
- Forgetting the rest of the set. If you wear a watch or bracelet, your chain should not compete with them. Our men’s bracelet size guide covers wrist sizing.
Our view on men’s necklace length
We design stainless steel watches and jewelry inspired by Miami and coastal places, and we think about how a piece is worn, not only how it looks in a photo. Most questions we hear about chains come down to one thing: where should the piece sit?
Our advice is to pick the spot first and the number second. If you want a pendant at the upper chest, work back from there. If you want a chain that disappears under a shirt, go shorter and thinner. Stainless steel suits this approach because it is a durable, low-maintenance material for daily wear. It is also why we keep our designs minimal, with color used in small, deliberate places.
We also tell people to start with one piece they will wear every day. Get the length right on that piece. Then add a second chain or a charm once you know what feels right on you.

FAQ
What is a good necklace length for a guy?
For most men, 20 to 22 inches is a good length. It sits below the collarbone and works with most shirts. Smaller necks may prefer 18 inches, and larger builds may prefer 24 inches.
Is a 20 or 22 inch chain better for men?
Choose 20 inches if you want a close, clean fit that stays visible above most collars. Choose 22 inches if you wear a pendant or want the chain to sit on the upper chest. If you have a thicker neck, 22 inches is usually more comfortable.
Is an 18 inch necklace too short for a man?
Not always. It is the shortest length most men wear, and it works on smaller necks. On a larger neck it can feel tight and sit like a choker. Measure your neck and add at least 2 inches before you decide.
Is a 28 inch chain too long for a man?
It depends on the look. A 28 inch chain sits low on the chest and suits wide chains, taller men and layered outfits. It can catch on clothing and swing when you move. For daily wear, 20 to 24 inches is easier to live with.
